As for poultry, administration of milk thistle fruit or its flavonolignan complex (silymarine) isolated from the seeds, is concentrated on protection and improvement of the liver function. The risk of liver damage caused by the effect of aflatoxin B1 from contaminated fodder is significantly reduced in broilers after administration of the complex of silymarine with phospholipids . As the study showed in this case, the seriousness of damage of the liver cells is reduced; this is proven by a biochemical examination of activity of liver enzymes (ALT) as well as by a histological assessment of the liver tissue. At the same time, intake of feed and body weight increase were observed.

Silyfeed® L is a feed supplement based on the processed fruit of Milk thistle (Silybum marianum (L.), Gaertner) in combination with tops of Maral root (Leuzea carthamoides (L.)). Flavonolignans (Silymarin) which are the main active substances in the Milk thistle fruit and are well known for liver cells protection against toxic substances. While the active principles of Maral root belong among the group of biologically active substances (phytoecdysteroids) with a significant positive effect on metabolism especially comprising immunity system support or adaptability of the organism. It has been proved that ecdysteroids have effect of a stimulator of synthesis of albumins in liver - increase of the total animal weight due to increased muscular tissue.
